What is AR450 Steel?
Tensalloy™ AR450 steel is a high-carbon steel alloy that has a surface hardness between 400-477 BHN.
Differences between AR400, AR450, and AR500 steel
While Tensalloy™ AR450 steel is similar to Tensalloy™ AR400 and Tensalloy™ AR500, there are some variances that make each unique. Differentiators include hardness levels, application uses, and cost. You can find hardness levels for AR400, AR450, and AR500 on their respective pages. While Tensalloy™ AR400, Tensalloy™ AR450, and Tensalloy™ AR500 all offer excellent hardness, the formability and brittleness of each vary. When looking for steel that requires hardness with good formability, Tensalloy™ AR400 and Tensalloy™ AR450 are the better options. If wear is a critical issue, Tensalloy™ AR500 is the appropriate choice based on the increased hardness and wear resistance.
Of course, cost is also a factor. Tensalloy™ AR400 is the most cost-effective option. While Tensalloy™ AR450 and Tensalloy™ AR500 have higher costs, they also achieve higher degrees of hardness. Clifton Steel representatives are here to help you determine which grade is the best choice for your needs.

Forming
Tensalloy™ AR450 is made for improved formability control of inclusion shape.
For plate over .750″ a radius of 6t is recommended when forming transverse to the rolling direction.
Welding
Tensalloy™ AR450 has excellent weldability and can be welded with simple procedures. Ideal welding wires include our Tensaweld Workmate for general purposes and Tensaweld Nickel-90 for increased tensile strength in the weld joint.
Cutting
Tensalloy™ AR450 can be cut to your exact specifications with plasma, oxy-Acetylene, laser, and water jet as well as with abrasive cut off saws.
Machining
Drilling, countersinking, counterboring, tapping, milling, and general machining can be done with conventional equipment and carbide tools.
