Military Protection for Commercial Needs

Clifton Steel has a history in providing armor steel to military and government customers. Now, we bring our high-class, bulletproof armor to the commercial segment. Our in-house heat treat lines allow us to produce reliable quenched and tempered armor steel plate at a moments notice. The lines allow for improved control of product, quicker response time, and the ability to offer specialized armor plate sizing (resulting in possible reduction of customer cost of manufacturing!) Our heat treated steel armor plate meets specs set by the National Institute of Justice (NIJ), EN 1063, and UL 752.

Commercial Armor Specifications

NIJ Standard-0101.06

The U.S. National Institute of Justice (NIJ) is the only national standard accepted by law enforcement and correction officers. They have created standard levels of classifications based on levels of ballistic protection. Having these standards helps users understand what their armor will protect them against. While a higher NIJ level typically means a higher protection level, they do not consider outside factors, such as weight or multiple-hit capabilities.

Our commercial armor is independently lab tested to NIJ Standard-0101.06.

Instead of simply testing one thickness, at Clifton Steel, we can test every heat lot upon request to make sure the commercial steel meets the standards set. Our expertise in the military industry means we hold ourselves to a higher standard than others. For you, that means complete traceability of your commercial armor is available upon request, leading to peace of mind.

EN 1063

BS EN 1063, or CEN 1063 is a European standard developed by the European Committee for Standardization. It dictates the testing standards for materials at certain threat levels of bullet resistance.

UL 752

The Underwriter’s Laboratory (UL) is a global safety certification organization established in 1894. Manufacturers must have their products or components tested by an impartial nationally recognized testing laboratory (NRTL) before claiming that they meet any of UL’s 1,500 established standards. The UL752 “Standard for Bullet-Resisting Equipment” is essentially a construction standard. It covers both individual materials as well as fixtures. Individual materials can include materials such as a fiberglass panel or pieces of laminated glass. Fixtures that are made of multiple materials are also covered in this standard. For instance, a bullet-resistant door with a frame or a set-in-place ballistic teller window, would all be covered in the UL752 standard.

At Clifton Steel, we test each unique heat treated commercial armor lot through a third-party, accredited ballistic laboratory. This guarantees your material meets the UL 752 standard protection level required. UL armor levels 1 to 3 are designed to resist three-shot clusters from common pistols, while levels 4 to 8 can resist one to five shots from rifles and submachine guns. Levels 9 and 10 are primarily used in military applications.
