Clifton Steel’s chromium carbide cladded steel plate offers superior strength and corrosion resistance. This bimetallic product starts with a mild steel base plate that is then fused by welding with a chrome carbide steel. Up to 32% chrome (chromium) and up to 5.8% carbon, chromium carbide metallurgically bonds to the steel’s surface to form a protective and durable surface that will not separate from the base metal.
Typical thickness tolerance of carbide steel overlay product is (+/-) 1/16” of nominal thickness ordered. For applications that are sensitive to thickness, Clifton also produces a tight tolerance overlay product of which thickness tolerances is (+/-) 3/64” of nominal thickness ordered.
Chromium carbide overlay steel plate is extremely hard, resistant to both wear and impact, and withstands high temperatures. As a result, Clifton Steel’s cladded plate is ideal for extreme wear applications, high temperature environments, and situations where corrosive problems exist. Chromium carbide overlaid plating also offers a high level of impact resistance.

Weight reduction
Clad metal helps cut costs by using a thinner plate, yet lasting longer. I/4″ Clif-Clad overlay on a 1/4″ base plate equals, or outperforms, a 1″ AR-400F. Reduce dead weight and increase capacity with overlay.

Hardness
Because it is composed of a combination of high chrome and high carbon, chromium carbide steel plate achieves unparalleled hardness. When the two metals join forces, they form chromium carbide crystals that reach 600 BHN on the Brinell hardness scale. That’s five times the hardness of unplated mild steel.
Impact strength
Chromium carbide overlay plate begins with a mild steel base. Custom applications can use an A-514 steel or other higher strength steel in replace of a mild steel base plate. The cushioning quality of this base metal allows it to absorb impact. In fact, Clifton Steel’s Clif-Clad chromium carbide overlay plating can withstand even severe impact from falling materials. Even in the event that the hard surface cracks, the strong, the deep weld bond the chromium carbide overlay provides prevents it from separating from the steel base plate under impact.
Forming
Clif-Clad chromium carbide overlay plate can be either cold formed or rolled. The recommended radius should be greater than 20 times the thickness of the plate. We recommend plates be rolled with the direction of the overlay welding. Forming can increase or decrease stress relief cracks in the overlay. This is typical and should not adversely affect the performance of the metal.
Cutting
Clifton Steel’s Clif-Clad chromium carbide steel clad plate requires a plasma cut method. We provide cutting to customer specifications, including providing countersunk holes for bolt-in applications if needed.
Machining
Because of its incomparable hardness, clad metal is not recommended to be machined. However, the chromium carbide overlay surface on Clif-Clad plating can be effectively blanchard ground. Clifton Steel can provide clad metal plates with any type of insert to fit your needs such as countersink or tapped holes. Consult a Clifton Steel representative for further details.
Welding
Clif-Clad chromium carbide overlay can be welded onto another mild steel base plate surface using our Tensaweld Workmate welding wire. For non-base plate welds, our Tensaweld Ultra-100, Ultra-200, and Ultra-300 are all compatible with the overlay.
