Clifton Steel’s chocky blocks are designed to produce a high strength wear solution, giving you an easy way to add customized protection to your equipment.  Chocky bars can be used in a variety of applications to create an extra, easy-to-add layer of protection in an abrasive and high impact situation.

 The chocky bars are made from a bimetallic product which is produced by metallurgically bonding a highly alloyed chromium molybdenum white iron to a mild steel backing plate. This bonding process yield a high shear strength wear solution.

The bonding process yields a high shear strength solution, making it a widely used material in most abrasive wear applications. The hardness (700 BHN) of the alloy provides maximum abrasion resistance, while the steel backing plate acts as a means of absorbing high impacts and allows easy fitting and use.

Installing on Curved Surfaces

  1. Clean surface that wear block will be welded to.
  2. FOR OUTSIDE CURVES: 
    Tack weld one end of the bar to the surface in at least three places, using a minimum of 1/2″ weld in each deposit (shown below). Hammer down the unwelded end of the bar to form the chocky bar to the curved surface. Stitch weld until the wear bar is firmly in place.

3. FOR INSIDE CURVES:

Tack weld one end of the bar to the surface using a minimum of 1/2″ weld in each deposit (shown below). Starting from the center, hammer down the bar to form the chocky bar to the curved surface. Stitch weld until chocky bar is firmly in place.

Welding

  1. Clean the surface that wear block will be welded to. Ensure the surface is as clean and flat as possible. 
  2. Tack weld the wear block into position. 
  3. Stitch weld in 2″ length runs, alternating ends, or similar to minimize heat input. Do not deposit weld within 1/8″ from the bond zone between the white iron and mild steel backing plate.

Cutting

  1. Clamp wear bar down securely.
  2. Cut through base to white iron bond area.
  3. Wrap bar with a cloth and carefully hit it with a hammer. Wear bar should break cleanly at the notch.
