Oil Hardening Tool & Die Steel
Cliftool is a reliable, non-deforming, oil-hardening tool steel with safe-hardening features and good machinability. Uniform properties and grain structure mean minimum dimensional changes during heat treatment. Maximum surface hardness with good, deep hardening properties make Cliftool alloy outstanding where shock and wear resistance are key factors.
Heat Treatment
Annealing: For maximum softness and best machinability, heat slowly to 1450° F; furnace is then cooled at 20° F / hr. to 850° F; air cooled to ambient.
Hardening: Heat to 1500° F for sections under 2-1/2 in. diameter. Soak 30 min./in. of greatest cross-section, then oil quench. Heat to 1550° F for sections over 2-1/2 in. diameter and soal 30 min./in. of greatest cross-section. A 1200° F preheat of larger sections is recommended. A 150° to 200° F oil bath should be used.
Tempering: A 400° F draw temperature will produce approximately a 57 Rockwell C. hardness. Increased toughness can be achieved at the cost of some hardness by using higher draw temperatures.
Pre-Machined Cliftool Ground Flat Stock
Cliftool precision ground oil-hardening flat stock is finished to precision size, eliminating time and cost for roughing. Ease of machinability is assured by a special annealing. Typical applications include dies, knives, gauges, fixtures, machine parts, punches and others.
Precision: Cliftool is ground to tolerances of +0.005", -0.000" on width, and ±0.001 on thickness. Squareness: Edge to surface, 0.003"/in. of thickness. End squareness: 0.004"/in. of width. A 10 - 20 microfinish is provided. Closer tolerances can be supplied to order.
Cost-saving: Cliftool can be supplied in 18" and 36" lengths, thicknesses from 1/16" to 2" width from 1-1/2" to 10". Squares are available to 4" maximum. Sizes above 1/4" available 0.015" oversize upon request.
